Module project Dutch Caribbean Aruba

HOH Hospital Oranjestad

The Need

The Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) is a medium-sized general hospital in Aruba. The hospital complex was inaugurated at the end of 1976 with 187 beds. In September 2014, the start of the renovation project of the hospital began, one of the largest construction projects in Aruban history. The Horacio Oduber Hospital is part of the Dutch Caribbean Hospital Alliance (DCHA) together with other hospitals in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

For the renovation of the cardiac catheterization department, we were asked to develop and deliver a module in which the patients could be examined and treated temporarily and with the hospital’s own equipment.

The plan

Because transporting a module by sea is a costly operation, we proposed to the hospital to keep the unit at the hospital after use during the renovation of the cardiac catheterization department and to accommodate a different functionality in the unit. Soon the eye fell on the CT-scanner that was located in the emergency department and actually took up too much space.

The Solution

In collaboration with Expandable, we developed a unique unit that was suitable for the use of cardiac catheterization equipment as well as for the installation of the current CT scanner. As a result, the unit became multi-purpose and the module, which was initially intended to be temporary, provides a permanent extra space now for the hospital.

The Outcome

A module has been developed and built that meets the requirements of a tropical climate and which can be used far into the future thanks to the unique systems installation engineering. The unit has not only been been made suitable for the current equipment, but also when this equipment needs to be replaced, that new equipment will be able to be built into this unit as well.
